So you have a week off from work (or maybe just a long weekend), and you’re not sure how to spend it. You could go on a cruise, take a trip to the beach, or fly someplace tropical. But what do those options all have in common? Their costs add up, especially if you plan a vacation with the whole family.
Luckily, a staycation is a fun and budget-friendly alternative that won’t break the bank. Here are 10 cheap and fun staycation ideas for the ultimate summer vacation spent at home.
1. Create Your Personal Paradise
Whoever said you have to travel to get your tropical experience clearly never staycationed properly. Just because you’re not on a beach doesn’t mean you can’t relax and be stress-free at home! Set up your comfiest beach or lounge chair, make yourself a refreshing drink (fresh lemonade usually does the trick!), grab your sunglasses, turn up some summer tunes, pick up your favorite book, and create your own corner of paradise. Oh, and don’t forget your SPF.
2. Build a Blanket Fort
Channel your inner child and build the ultimate blanket and pillow fort. Come on, you know you want to! Grab all the blankets, sheets, comforters, and pillows you can, and start building. Make sure you build around your TV for optimal entertainment from inside the fort. Once it’s built, stream a movie or pick up a book, and just relax.
3. Camp Out in Your Backyard
Set up tents, sleeping bags, blankets, and pillows for the whole family in your backyard. Get a campfire going and roast hotdogs and marshmallows for yummy treats. You can tell scary stories, or just share fun family memories. Not everyone is a fan of the big outdoors, so someone is bound to sneak inside to the comfort of their own bed. But hey, it’s the thought that counts.
4. Host an At-Home Wine Tasting
Have you ever dreamed of experiencing a wine tasting at a European or Napa Valley vineyard? Hosting an at-home wine tasting party is the perfect way to enjoy a variety of wine with people you love at a fraction of the cost. You’ll need a couple bottles of wine (we suggest each guest contribute a bottle), the right food to accompany the drinks (an assortment of cheese, crackers, grapes, apples, nuts, or dark chocolate is standard), and pens and paper to take notes on your new favorite wines. It’s a perfect way to host happy guests!
5. Throw a Luau Party
Although you may not be anywhere tropical, you can certainly dine as if you were. Have your own personal luau with your family, or invite your friends over for a night of summer fun. Serve tropical drinks and refreshments, play relaxing island music, and cook up flavorful Hawaiian-inspired food. If you want to go all out, your local party store is sure to have luau-themed decorations and tiki torches for you to light around your backyard. Most importantly, don’t forget the leis!
6. Plant a Garden
There are tons of ways to put your green thumb to work this summer, and what better time to do it than on your staycation? You can start a vegetable garden, build a planter box, start growing herbs, liven up your yard with colorful flowers, create hanging plant arrangements, and more. Visit your local nursery to pick up plants or seeds to start fresh.
7. Have a Slip n Slide Party
Bear with us on this one; we know this idea sounds crazy. And it is. It’s crazy fun. Invite your friends over for the coolest party yet. Remember how much fun you and your friends had setting up a slip-n-slide in your backyard growing up? You can purchase a real slip-n-slide, or you can build your own with thick plastic sheeting that you can find at most hardware stores. Keep a hose constantly running water over it for optimal slipping and sliding.
8. Tackle Your Netflix Queue
We know you don’t want to spend your entire staycation cooped up inside your house, so this is the perfect plan for a rainy day. Cuddle up on the couch and stream a movie or start the TV series you’ve wanted to watch but never had the time for. Want to take this to the next level? Host your own “film festival” and invite friends over for a marathon of the movies *everyone* is talking about.
9. Try a New Hobby
Is there an activity you’ve always wanted to try, but felt like there weren’t enough hours in the day to do so? Or maybe you want to start a new hobby but you’re not sure what interests you. Use your staycation to find a new hobby you enjoy. Teach yourself to knit, start a blog about something you love, learn a new language, or start crafting – the possibilities are endless.
10. Go On a Yoga Retreat in Your Living Room
Your staycation doesn’t have to be a sedentary one. With yoga, you can still relax while getting exercise. There are tons of free yoga videos available online that you can stream from the comfort of your own home. Dim the lights, play relaxing music, light a few candles, and have a mini yoga retreat.
Use these ideas during your next staycation, or try them out through out the summer for optimal relaxation and ultimate fun around the home. If you want more staycation ideas, we’ve got you covered.
